Buying clothes for your significant other can be a genuine nightmare. Not only do you have to worry about picking the correct size and length but the matter of personal taste can turn something as simple as a t-shirt into your very own horror movie. The way round this is to guarantee something she'll love with the right accessory. Jewellery, belts, scarves and designer bags are so varied that it might look just as daunting as choosing a dress, but don't panic. There are a few tips to choosing the perfect personal gift for your gorgeous lady.

Whether you choose to buy her a bag, a ring, a pair of earrings or a scarf, it's time to use your eyes. Look at the style she wears already. If you see her wear nothing but plain silver-coloured jewellery, she won't be thrilled with a gold necklace with a ruby stone. Just because something is expensive, doesn't mean it will be something she'll want to wear. Similarly, if you want to splash out on her and buy a designer bag look carefully at the bags she already owns. Louis Vuitton is a classic designer bag choice but it certainly isn't to everyone's taste and you won't be happy if you spend 300 on a handbag and she doesn't use it. If you can get away with it, take a bag she already owns to a store such as Debenhams or Selfridges (any shop that sells multiple brands) and ask a shop assistant for advice on picking a bag that she's guaranteed to love. You can also do this when buying jewellery. Look at her collection and pick out the key points. What is the metal that is most abundant? Are there favourite stones she seems to favour? Are the pieces big and bulky or small and subtle? Is it bling or more rustic/boho? When you go to a jewellery shop to pick her the perfect present, don't be afraid of telling the assistant in the store what you noticed in your lady's collection so they can help you. If you fancy buying a ring, always take a ring she already owns with you if you don't her size because, as with buying lingerie, you won't just be able to guess it once you're there.

If you don't have a fortune to spend or just want to buy your partner something she'll always use then why not use the Winter season as your inspiration. A cosy scarf is a great gift and there are plenty of options available to you. Merino wool is a great place to start. It is unbeatable in terms of warmth and is a fine soft knit so not too bulky. A good-quality merino wool scarf will set you back 20-30 so won't break the bank and can be used for years.

Finally, if you are feeling brave then you could pick her out a stunning garment. If you choose to do this then unless you are a real fashionista why not enlist the help of her best friend? She will be able to point you in the right direction and make sure you give your significant other a Christmas present that shows you really care.
